Mulching isn't just ornamental

As you maintain your yard this spring and summer consider this:
While mulching makes your yard look clean and crisp, it is not just ornamental...It serves a very practical purpose in your landscape.  Mulch will provide insulation for new roots and helps to retain moisture and protect against the heat of the summer.  It will also reduce the amount of water that evaporates from the soil and that is critical as it warms up. Another key component of mulch is it improves the quality of soil by breaking up the clay and allowing for better air movement and water in your soil.  And last but not least...It keeps down on weeds!  And we all love that!

Spring storm approaching...how do you prepare?

This time of year we often get severe weather as we experience the dramatic shifts from warm to cold during the spring and fall months.  Some precautions you can take for upcoming storms...

1.) Check to be sure you do not have any dead/rotted or dying trees (at the base of the tree) close to your home.  When the strong winds roll in, the trees that are compromised are the first to be affected.
2.) Be aware the ground is already saturated and trees will topple over much easier
3.) Stake any small or newly planted trees to help ensure that they will not blow over during strong winds.
4.) In the event of damage to your home or trees...be sure to have your insurance policy easily accessible.

***Look at the base of your trees and where branches meet with the trunk and look for any rot or splits...this is where the integrity of the tree is compromised.  In this case, it is critical that you contact a certified arborist to make an assessment.

Most tree services offer 24 hour emergency service.  Be sure to have a couple of numbers on hand in the case of an emergency!
